Pounds and Ounces
The most familiar system in the US and UK. Weight is measured in pounds, with each pound equal to 16 ounces. A fish weighing 2 lbs 8 oz means two full pounds plus eight ounces. It's intuitive for everyday use and works well for scales that round to the nearest ounce. The limitation is precision โ the smallest increment is 1 oz, which is 0.0625 lbs.
Pounds and Hundredths
Used in legal-for-trade and agricultural scales, including all Pro Tournament Scales systems. Weight is expressed as a decimal โ 2.78 lbs instead of 2 lbs 12 oz. Each hundredth of a pound (0.01 lbs) equals about 0.16 oz, making this system more precise. It's the standard for certified weighing equipment and works directly with tournament software without conversion.
When to Use Each
For tournament weigh-ins using PTS equipment, weights are always recorded in lbs and hundredths. If your tournament rules require announcing weights in lbs and ounces, use the converter above or the reference table below to translate in real time. The table covers every hundredth from 0.01 to 1.00, so you can look up any decimal fraction quickly at the weigh-in table.
How to Convert
To go from decimal to lbs/oz: take the decimal portion and multiply by 16. Example: 2.78 lbs → 0.78 × 16 = 12.48, rounds to 12 oz → 2 lbs 12 oz.
To go from lbs/oz to decimal: multiply ounces by 0.0625 and add to the whole pounds. Example: 2 lbs 8 oz → 8 × 0.0625 = 0.50 → 2.50 lbs.
